The Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies, and Image Exploitation IOSB in Karlsruhe has been active in the field of driver assistance systems and fully automated and connected driving since the 1980s, at the time still under the name of Fraunhofer IITB. With the departments »Interactive Analysis and Diagnosis«»Object Recognition«, »Video Exploitation Systems« and »Systems for Measurement, Control and Diagnosis«, the IOSB covers the entire spectrum starting from interior monitoring to sensor processing and ground truth collection up to the development and simulation of partially to fully automated and connected driving functions.

Current research includes for example aerial image analysis of traffic situations, methods for cooperative automated driving of different SAE-level, functionally verifiable maneuver planning, development of novel ways of imaging vehicle-to-vehicle communication via headlights, as well as interior monitoring including passenger intention recognition, and privacy-safe data recording in public traffic. In addition, Fraunhofer IOSB is a partner of the »Test Area Autonomous Driving Baden-Württemberg« and the »Profilregion Mobilitätssysteme Karlsruhe«.

The institute has two »Vehicles for Research and Technology Experiments« (VERTEX) for fully automated driving and authorized for testing on public roads, being equipped with longitudinal and lateral vehicle control, CAN access and redundant close-to-serial-production 360° sensors, as well as mounting positions for additional sensors or test equipment.

The »Integrated Autonomous Driving Lab« of the Fraunhofer IOSB enables the research and development of novel interior monitoring methods and human-machine interaction concepts. For development and evaluation, augmented and virtual reality are used as well as a driving simulator equipped with a multitude of operating elements.

The possibilities of cooperation with customers are manifold: The institute offers studies and consulting services, conceptual design, development, implementation and evaluation of complete functions as well as data acquisition.
