The Fraunhofer Institute for Factory Operation and Automation IFF researches and develops application-oriented solutions for production, logistics and automation.

A total of five main departments develop and implement customer-specific, technical and organizational solutions for products, production and logistics systems and services.

The competencies for transport research are located in the main department »Logistics Systems and Networks«.

1. Logistics Strategies and Networks

The department Logistics Strategies and Networks deals with the problems of designing, planning and controlling logistics networks. An example with reference to transport logistics challenges is the »City-Logistics« project, which was developed and piloted in Magdeburg.

2. Logistics System Planning and Operation

The department Logistics System Planning and Operation deals with topics such as process and system optimization, technology deployment and information management for the various tasks and phases of the planning and operation of logistics systems. One project focus is on personnel flow management. Solutions for the diagnosis and control of passenger flows in complex building structures are developed. Another topic is port logistics. Various activities for the optimisation of the use of port logistics facilities and equipment are carried out by means of process simulation.

3. Disposal Logistics in the Context of Environmental Engineering

The field of waste management logistics includes the development of regional concepts for waste management as well as regional solutions for the thermal utilisation of renewable raw materials and residues, taking into account logistical as well as technical/technological aspects. Integrated solutions are developed, starting with forecasts for the emergence of various materials through site planning to the design of recycling plants.
