Sustainable (Power Generating) Drives
Sustainable drives in the rail sector encompass a variety of technologies that aim to maximize energy efficiency and minimize environmental impact. One of the most common methods is electrification, where trains are powered by electricity that ideally comes from renewable energy sources. In this context, battery electric and fuel cell-powered drives are other innovative technologies that need to be considered. Synthetic fuels from renewable energy sources (biomass, wind and solar energy) offer a flexible and sustainable solution to support the transition to climate-neutral mobility. They are particularly promising for reducing greenhouse gas emissions on non-electrified routes, where diesel locomotives are still very widespread. In addition, the combination of an internal combustion engine with an electric drive, as a hybrid, enables more efficient energy use and reduces fuel consumption and emissions. All of these approaches help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy efficiency in the rail sector.
