Automation is the use of technology to replace manual processes, simplify repetitive tasks and eliminate activities that are not worthy of human intervention. This involves the use of sensors, machines or systems and software that perform tasks without human intervention. The use of automation solutions can reduce the time required for work tasks, save costs and make processes more repeatable and safer. 

The Fraunhofer Rail institutes develop technologies for the automated acquisition of quality, status and process data and their analytical evaluation. They design and implement solutions for robot-based diagnosis, maintenance and servicing of rolling stock and rail infrastructure. The basis of all solutions is the consistent use of digital twins of all objects in use in order to ensure the greatest possible flexibility and resilience in the operation of the solutions.
