Concepts and solutions at process, technology or information level must be discussed in the context of their sustainability in addition to their actual operational feasibility. This applies to innovative vehicle or handling technologies and infrastructures as well as to the IT systems required for digitalization projects. Starting from the entire life cycle of a solution, we consider the use of resources and the resulting effects from the extraction and processing of raw materials, the manufacture of components and products, use and operation through to end-of-life with the possibilities of closing the loop at both product and material level. The focus can be on individual details in operation, but upstream and downstream processes and changes may also need to be discussed and evaluated when making comparisons during system changes. Starting points here are systems for modeling and management (e.g. BIM), concepts of the circular economy, quality management and the quantification of ecological effects.
