The use of different modes of transport often makes sense for the efficient transportation of goods. The benefits of intermodal transportation for companies can be individually determined through well-founded calculations and the use of modern analysis tools. These include analyses of cost savings, service level, energy consumption or CO₂ emissions and synchromodality. The latter describes the deeper linking of the flow of information and goods as well as the flexibilization of the transport process in the sense of Industry 4.0. For transport, this means less prefabricated, long-term planned transport chains, but increasingly flexible transport chains that can be adapted during transport. This is achieved through the use of integrated software tools and innovative business and cooperation models in the transport industry. With the help of these analyses, the framework conditions for the use of alternative transport carriers and transport chains can be created. This will enable the industry to deal with climatic changes and the associated political changes, but also to respond to other industry challenges, such as the prevailing shortage of drivers and skilled workers.
